American River College is a member of Viewpoint Gallery, and this membership allows you to attend many events free of charge.  Viewpoint created the Student Program to help accentuate the education of photo students in the Sacramento region, and it’s a great way to learn more on specific topics by working artists, and a chance to get your foot in the door with the local photography scene… There is a mix of free and paid events below.  To register or find more about these events, go to Viewpoint Gallery’s Website

Print Critique
Date: Thursday, March 12 – 7:00pm to 9:00pm
All high school and college students are invited to bring prints or digital files to the critique. Discussion centers on the intent of the image, its message, creative elements, and compositional issues. Critiques are always intended to encourage students to pursue and refine their art.

Viewpoint critiques are an excellent opportunity to grow artistically and discuss your work with other students who share your interest. The event is free, and street parking is free after 6 p.m. You do not need to be a member to attend.

WORKSHOP

Creating Realistic HDR Images
Date: Saturday, March 14 – 9:00 AM
Lewis Kemper presents a workshop illustrating the various and exciting ways for you to utilize High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography. Lewis will show you how to create realistic HDR using a variety of techniques and popular software.

These include:

• Photomatix Pro
• Photomatix Pro/Lightroom combination
• Photoshop/Lightroom combination
• Photoshop/ACR combination
• Nik HDR Efex Pro 2

Experience all these alternatives and see which one suits you best.

ARTIST LECTURE

Ann Mitchell-Making the Creative Leap
Date: Sunday, March 15 – 1:00pm to 3:00pm
Over the course of a photographic career spanning three decades, Ann Mitchell has reinvented her creative approach to photography many times. Starting as a commercial food and product photographer just looking for a way to keep her creative juices flowing, she then transitioned into fine art landscape, architecture and most recently, magic realism photography. Through this process, she developed a set of steps that can help anyone take their next creative leap.

Ann will take you through her creative process in this lecture you can’t miss!

 

FUTURE WORKSHOPS

Getting the Most out of Adobe Camera Raw
Date: March 21 – 9:00 AM
Lewis Kemper presents a workshop illustrating this exciting and versatile workflow for digital photographers.

• Using Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw (Photoshop), Lewis Kemper will go over all the tools in the raw processor and show you two different methods for processing your raw files.
• Learn how to get the most out of the Adjustment Brush, Graduated Filter and Radial Filter Tools as well as the Highlight, Shadows and Clarity sliders.
• Lewis will show you the importance of using the Camera Calibration Presets, lens profiles, setting up camera develop presets, and talk about white balance in the camera vs. in processing.
• Learn how to process your images for creative interpretation and not just as literal scene captures.
• There is something here for everybody from those contemplating shooting Raw and experienced Raw shooters as well.

 

Discover Zion – A Photographer’s Vision
Date: Wednesday, March 25 – 7:00pm to 9:00pm
​The workshop will be led by Charles Farmer ​and it offers an opportunity for past Zion Workshop members to ​share their images and workshop experiences with all Viewpoint members. You will ​hear what its like to attend a ​multiple​-​day​, location​ workshop ​and what might be in store for future trips.

 

Photographing the Ones You Love
Date: March 28 – 9:00 AM
If you can see humanity in the people you love, you can make great pictures right in your own home. Cartier-Bresson called the photographer a ‘hunter,’ a searcher for something simple that evokes so much more. It’s not very hard to snap a picture of a child. But to make a picture of childhood takes good seeing. Laszlo hopes to inspire you with the desire to take great pictures of the ones you love.

Student Lecture – Photographing Art in Public Places
Date: Thurs, Mar. 26, 7-9pm
Student lectures are intended to supplement a student’s school experience by offering talks and demonstrations on areas of photographic interest, topics and techniques. Lectures and demonstrations are given by people experienced in their field.
